Election Issues

After studying the election issues the Octopi practiced their letter wrting skills writing to President Obama. They choose an issue they felt strongly about and expressed their opinion. Here are a few examples:

Dear President Obama:

I am somewhat concerned about the jobs in the U.S.  I am concerned because not so many people have jobs here because all the jobs are in China because we don’t pay them much so that means that jobs do better in China than in the U.S.  But it’s not good for the economy and if we bring back jobs to the U.S. than the economy will get better.
I also would like to have more support for our aerospace and maritime industries as well.  They’re very important for us and the world.
I hope if you get to be president again Mr. Obama, please make this possible.

Sincerely yours,
M J

Dear Mr. President:

I am writing to you today to talk about the environment. I think the environment is BIG issue! The Environment is a lot like a closet. You can keep stuffing it and stuffing it but then one day you open it and put in just one deck of cards, and then the entire thing crashing on your head. In our case it would be a lot worse than a ball bouncing on your head, or your mom yelling at you. In our case neither you nor your mom would still be alive!
Now, this is a crazy idea, but you know those mini cars in the Mind Ware and Young Explores magazines? Well, they come with pumpers that can turn water into fuel! I think we should full scale them and use them instead of gas!

Thank you for your time,
S. L.B.

Dear Mr. President Obama,
I am concerned about ‘the Affordable Health Care Act’, I agree with it because my mom explained the whole reason of why she agrees with it and I agree with her that its fair, everyone should have health care and be more affordable.  There are a lot of people in the United States that are poor or can’t afford health care and if they got hurt or sick couldn’t get help.  I think it is good that they can now get more affordable health care.
My suggestion is to lower health care prices for everyone by putting the cost into taxes. That way everyone would have health care and would be able to be treated when they are sick.
Sincerely Yours,
F B

Dear President Obama:
I’m concerned about the enviroment because there are so much pollution effecting animal’s habitats and people.  There’s too much fuel being burned it’s killing plants, people and animals.  If we pollute more our economy will go down, people will lose lives and most importantly there will be no food or safe water.
I approve of your suggestion about investing in clean jobs. But I have an idea to save up money for water powered stuff like cars and factorys which have water vapor as exhaust. I admire your suggestions about the enviroment.
Sincerely yours,
N E

IslandWood

The Octopi spent four days and three nights on Bainbridge Island at IslandWood, an environmental studies camp. They learned about NW flora and fauna, did water studies, hiked, worked in the garden, sang songs and stayed in an awesome lodge which they had all to theirselves. Oh, and ate some great food like homemade pizza and ice cream sandwiches! It was a fun trip and not only did they learn a lot but everyone became better friends.

Chemistry

The Octopi have begun their study of Chemistry by learning to recognize the characteristic properties of substances. Here they are calculating the density of various liquids including, milk, glue, soap, coke and baby oil using the formula D=m/V.
